MISSION SUPPORT TEAM REPORT

 August 7, 2007

Carol Gurung, Missionary in Nepal was with us at RLC April 22.  When we picked her up at the airport, we then quickly drove around DC, so that she could have her first view of the Capitol.  Using my cell phone she shared the experience with her family, telling them she just saw the building that’s on the penny, etc.  She said that she would love to see DC with her family in June when the children would be finished with school.

Carol shared her life story with the congregation at both the first and third service.  She shared with the Sunday School department as well, showing her film.  The offering that day with matching funds from Thrivent was $1,800.  The mission team decided  to give $500 to the Gurungs, $500 to World Mission Prayer League (designated for the Gurung family educational fund for the children), and $800 to the RLC Mission account.

Carol and family did return to this area in June, staying at the Hauge home for 3 days, with a full day in DC.  Another afternoon there was a picnic in the Hauge back- yard with the Jenkins, Cheatham, and Whelpley families, along with Pr. Jim Kniseley, and the Hauges as hosts.  The family was introduced one noon hour to the owner of the café behind Hyperion coffee shop, who is from Nepal.  It was fun to watch Kris and this man in dialog for quite some time speaking in their native tongue.  Their desire is that we connect with this Nepali man here and befriend him.  He is Hindu.

Considerations for the Fall:

   1.   Encourage letter writing to the Missionaries in Nepal – the Ruohoniemis, Gurungs and Thorsons.    Dr. Stephen and Becky Thorson were in the area in June, staying at the Hauge home, but speaking at St. Peter’s in Stafford at two services.  Also the Corraos, Whelpleys and Hauges shared in a picnic with them that Sunday afternoon.

    2.  Voice of the Martyrs – Select one family suggested in this ministry, and fill a bag of items they can use.  Also writing letters of encouragement.

    3.  Quilting and Prayer lap blankets will start up in September – Wanda LaRue.

    4.  Knitted/crocheted Prayer Shawls and knitted preemie baby caps – Liv Hauge

    5.  Gathering of warm clothing and craft items collected and to be sent to Shishmaref, Alaska by October.

    6.  Gathering of materials through contributions for Lutheran World Relief Layettes.
